My deepest gratitude goes first and foremost to Associate Professor Chen Jie, my supervisor, for her constant encouragement and guidance. She has walked me through all the stages of the writing of this thesis. Without her consistent and illuminating instruction, this thesis could not have reached its present form.

Abstract
Animal Farm is most famous in the West as a stinging critique of the history and rhetoric of the Russian Revolution. Most people consider that Animal Farm stands for any human society, for its capitalist, socialist, fascist, or communist. It possesses the internal structure of a nation, with a government (the pigs), a police force or army (the dogs), a working class (the other animals), and state holidays and rituals. However the different fates of these characters could also be considered as different concepts of life and lifestyle.
Boxer is an idealist, who seeks for an ideal life. For the dream, he is very persistent and hard working. However, before he donates himself so much in the work, he never thinks about the practice, thus he has a bad end. In his life, the most important thing is to work harder, while, he doesn’t try to figure out what and why he should work harder for. Persistence and hard work are valuable qualities that we need. But a realistic goal should be the primary condition.
Mollie is a Pragmatist. Nothing is more important than her sugar and ribbons. No matter how good this world was, once she did not get what she wanted, this life was not perfect for her. Mollie has the most practical material requirements to life .But she is a selfish person, she doesn’t care about other people and team work. She only lives for herself and her own interests. In the dark ages, she might be able to live with her own cleverness.
As what we always say, you are what you eat .The two distinct denouements of Boxer and Mollie are decided by their own characteristics and lifestyles. Work hard and no thinking, must be sacrificed by the era. Selfishness and only the pursuit of interests must be dying alone. We need to work hard as Boxer and be practical about our dream as Mollie. In that way could we have a happy life.

摘要《动物庄园》是西方最有名的批判俄国革命历史的小说。大多数人认为，动物农场代表了人类社会，无论是资本主义，社会主义，法西斯主义或共产主义。它拥有一个国家的内部结构，有政府（猪），一个警察或军队（狗），工人阶级（其他动物），以及国家节日和仪式。然而这些不同角色的命运也可以被认为是生活观念和生活方式的不同所导致的结果。
拳王是一个理想主义者，他追求理想的生活。为了这个梦想，他坚定不移，勤劳苦干。然而在付出了那么多之前，他从未考虑过他自己和实际的情况，他的结局并不好。在他的生活中，最重要的事情就是要更努力的工作，但是，他从来没想过要弄清楚他要为了什么和为什么要而更努力工作。坚持和努力工作都是我们所需要的良好品格，但是，一个切合实际的目标才是先决条件。
