Acknowledgments One of the greatest joys during the writing of this thesis is discussing with people who have given not just their time and attention, but their hearts and souls as well. I would like to thank the following people for their dedication and contribution, without which the path to the finishing line would have been a whole lot more bumpy.
My profound gratitude first goes to Ms. Yan Ming, my supervisor, who has generously shared her inspirational and provocative ideas during many of our face-to-face discussion sessions. Only with her generous assistance and skilled guidance can I finally complete my thesis.24519

Abstract
Gothic Fiction is a unique literature form of history and legend reflecting culture, politics and various social phenomenons. There is no doubt that Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are the representative works of gothic fiction. Frankenstein and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde have intertextuality on theme, culture background and character, which can be annotated and reflected by multiple theories: Sigmund Freud's "The Ego and the Id", Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche's "Beyond Good and Evil" and Xunzi's "Human Nature is Evil". By means of analyzing the intertextuality of the two works, this paper actually has combed through the connecting themes, cultural backgrounds, and human natures in an intertextual view by framing on seemingly different thoughts and theories from western and eastern philosophers.
This dissertation also presents the implication that gothic fiction is a fantastic way of reflecting the history and society. And the intertextuality between these two works exactly has witnessed the picturesque description of the social condition of the day when the bourgeoisies were gradually rising, and have also explored the commonality of various humanistic theories.
Key Words: gothic fiction, intertextuality, human nature, cultural background
