Title On Translators’ Subjectivity from the Perspective of Reception Theory: Reasons of the Different Chinese Translations of Paradise Lost
Abstract As readers of the original, translators’ subjectivity, such as their attitudes, viewpoints and translation habits, has a great influence on their final versions。 This paper aims at studying translators’ subjectivity from the perspective of reception theory——researching how translators’ different viewpoints and attitudes make an influence on their process of translation。 This paper takes three Chinese versions of Paradise Lost, a non-rhythm poem with complex sentences and structures, as samples。 Through comparing three stylistically different translations of Paradise Lost, that is, Fu Donghua’s, Zhu Weiji’s and Zhu Weizhi’s versions, and comparatively analysing these three translators’ backgrounds, translation habits and expected effects of their versions, I want to make it clear how these three translators understand the original, and how to translate it。 My conclusion is that translators’ subjectivity is affected by translators’ backgrounds, translation habits and expected effects of versions。 Translators’ backgrounds, including living environment, educational background and status, mainly affect translators’ ideas and then decide how translators receive the original。 Translation habit is formed from ideas and different types of literature which translators receive; they affect versions’ styles。 Finally, the expected effects of versions mainly make translators choose suitable translation strategies on the basis of their aims。
