1.2 Introduction of Wuthering Heights
Wuthering Heights mainly has two subjects. One is the love tragedy between Heathcliff and Catherine, the other is Heathcliff’s revenge. The old master of Wuthering Heights Mr. Earnshaw was a squire. He had a son named Hindley and a daughter named Catherine. One day, he brought a gypsy brat into his home after his journey and named him Heathcliff. Hindley denigrated Heathcliff as a slave for revenge and insulted him after his father died. Heathcliff and Catherine fell into love by virtue of the same of nature little by little, and they became loyal partners. But when Edgar Linton from Thrushcross Grange broke into their love world, Catherine changed and distanced herself from Heathcliff gradually. At last, Catherine betrayed her love. She married Edgar Linton. When Heathcliff came back again, he became wealthy. Actually, the reason why he returned is that he would take revenge on those people who ever insulted him. He firstly cajoled Hindley into gambling, then Wuthering Heights were under his belt; soon after, Hindley died due to drunkenness, Hindley’s son Hareton became Heathcliff’s slave; then Heathcliff married Edgar Linton’s sister Isabella deliberately and abused her after he married him; Catherine died when she gave birth to a child, ten years later, Heathcliff tricked the daughter of Edgar Linton and Catherine Linton Catherine, into marrying his dying son Linton Heathcliff. His plan was realized, but he couldn’t escape from the death of Catherine. In the end of story, the young Hareton and the Catherine Linton inherited Thrushcross Grange and Wuthering Heights, as well as the estates settling down in Thrushcross Grange.
