In the dissertation Use of Symbolism in William Faulkner’s A Rose for Emily by Wang Daoshui, he said “In his famous short story A Rose for Emily, Faulkner uses symbolism to reveal the clashes between the new values and the old ones in the South by depicting Emily’s tragic love, which makes the novel profoundly thematic。”(Wang 45) In the novel, Faulkner used symbolism in many places, such as the windows, especially the rose。 The rose had its own peculiar meaning。 Faulkner once said: Here lived a miserable woman。 Her tragedy could not be alternative。 Nobody was able to help her。 I could not help myself sympathizing her。 Under the circumstances no one would refuse to show his respect。 To a man, you probably would toast to him, while to such a woman, what you could do was to send her a rose sincerely。
In this dissertation Metaphor of Faulkner’s Rose:A Rose for Emily by Chen Junhong, the author said that to Faulkner, this significant title was not in order to enhance the dramatics of the novel。 In deed, it was requirement from the author’s heart。 It imaged Faulkner’s infatuation, bemoan and some kind of complex feeling for Emily。 Emily was a figure out of community and found very difficult in adapting herself to the secular world and her love romance was doomed to be not good ending。 One point worth mentioning is that when Emily found her lover cheated on her, then she thought to be insulted not only to her but his glorious family as well, then the extreme women adopted her extreme method to keep her lover forever within her house no matter it is just a body。 Her ultra behavior explained that she was the embodiment of the old tradition and valuation。 As a tragic figure, Emily devoted herself to love。 The rose stood her love。 When people in the town saw her body, the rose had already withered for a long time。
In Faulkner’s Nobel Prize accepting speech, he said: I believe that man will not merely endure, he will prevail。 He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion, and sacrifice, and endurance。 His faith was imbued with his every novel。 The “rose” in A Rose for Emily bore the weight of his faith and feeling。
