Abstract   In British and American literature, “revenge” is a very common theme。 But when talking about this theme, people may usually think of a famous novel - Moby Dick。 The main character Ahab’s self-dependence, craziness and resourcefulness left a deep impression on us。 This thesis analyzes Ahab’s revenge in four parts fully and meticulously。 The first part discusses the profound meaning of the theme of revenge。 The second part analyzes avenger Ahab’s character in different aspects。 The third part analyzes the target of revenge - Moby Dick。 The last part analyzes the deep roots of Ahab’s revenge。 The goal and value of this thesis are to explore the destiny, to seek the truth and to call for peace between man and nature。 93829

1。 Introduction 

Melville’s is a very distinctive American writer in nineteenth-century, his masterpiece Moby Dick is the pinnacle of his artistic creation, for it is a masterwork of epic and tragic situations。 This novel, through the narrator Ishmael’s mouth, tells the story of Captain Ahab’s revenge and shows us a crazy avenger, spending most of his life in the hunting of white whale--Moby Dick。 Ahab is a stubborn almost crazy man who plans to send revenge to Moby Dick, a white whale who has destroyed one of his legs in a whaling operation。 Starbuck tried to persuade Ahab to give up the revenge plan, but he could not listen to any advice, bent on revenge only revenge。 After all the difficulties and obstacles, they finally found the Moby Dick。 Ahab and the crew were fighting with them for three days and nights, with a harpoon struck by Moby Dick。 White whale Moby Dick was angered, the “Pequod” ship was sunk。 All the sailors only Ishmael was rescued, to tell the story。 Ahab’s revenge shows us the determination of human beings’ fighting against the God。
