2。 Literature Review
Culture is a behavior mode, both implicit and explicit。 Through the use of symbols, culture makes people acquire and teach, and constitute the remarkable achievements of human groups。 The basic core of culture is the value system chosen through the history。 Culture is the product of human activity, and also the factor limiting further human activities (Kroeber& Clyde 226)。 Xing Gongwan said: language must be understood as a Speech combination system, having a long history of cultural background, and capable of conveying the information (Zhu 118)。 For example, people address in foreign countries will find that audience would make response to his jokes without emotions and in perfect silence, but the same joke will make audience in china heavily laugh。 That is the result of differences in cultures, which we also can say the outcome of cross cultures。 In 18thand 19th century, Humboldt (W。 von Humboldt) proposed the "linguistic relativism ", said: language reflects a nation's social, culture, and psychological structure, and also personal view of the world is controlled by the language (Mo 97)。 American anthropologist Edward Sapir and B。 L。 Whorf compare the American Indian language, and conclude that all the nation's concept of time, the concept of space, color concept, family concept, subject and object values are not the same, and that these national concepts reflect in the language。 From the above, we can conclude that people's words and deeds reflect certain cultural connotation consciously or unconsciously。来自优I尔Q论T文D网WWw.YoueRw.com 加QQ7520~18766
In a research of junior high school students’ cultural awareness (Tian 114), 123 students are asked to fill in a questionnaire。 The results turn out that students' intercultural awareness is relatively weak。 Because of college entrance examination, they think of language skills, namely listening speaking reading and writing as the core of language learning。 They prefer to remember the words in grammar rules rather than understand the cultural background。 As a result, the students have a large number of vocabularies, and they are good at grammar, of course they get very high scores。 However, the actual application of language, especially the ability of cross-cultural communication in real conditions is still insufficient。 It concludes that English teaching involves not only the English language itself, but also the English cultural background knowledge。 According to the curriculum standards and textbooks we should gradually penetrate the Western cultural background knowledge into English teaching and pay attention to cultivate students' cultural awareness and intercultural communicative competence, so as to cultivate qualified language users。
3。 Significance of Cultivating Ability of Intercultural Communication
Nowadays, the teaching of English is the teaching of English culture。 The latest new curriculum standard calls on every students equipped with cultural awareness of different greetings, body language, appellation and diet custom in daily association。 Also, students are required to make proper responds according to various history, geography, weather, recreational sports, festivals and compliments。 During the period of junior high school, English teaching in classes is the most efficient approach to foster students with such international awareness。 The ultimate target of English teaching is to help students communicate freely and correctly with others in English。 The mutual relationship between language and culture leads to the impartible relationship between English teaching and culture teaching。
3。1 Definition of intercultural awareness and competence
Cross culture awareness is an inclusive process。 It asks for an excellent and full knowledge on customs, habits, and so on, which are different or conflict with the national culture, and also the attitude of tolerance to accept and adapt other cultures (Hinkel 1999)。What is intercultural communication competence? Cross-cultural communication is a field of study that looks at how people from differing cultural backgrounds communicate, in similar and different ways among themselves, and how they endeavor to communicate across cultures。 Intercultural communicative competence is an important concept in the field of pragmatics。 Therefore, it has a certain correlation with the scope of pragmatics。 Widdowson (1989) pointed out that intercultural communicative competence is based on grammatical competence, using the rules of language, not only referring to the ability to use grammar rules of sentence correctly, but also the correct use of language forms in the specific language environment, the ability to implement a communication function。 Jiang Zhanhao (2009) pointed out that a good lack of intercultural communicative competence will directly lead to the failure of language communication (Jiang 05)。 He Ziran and Chen Xinren (2004) pointed out that the reason of accounting for intercultural communication failure is not the general diction errors in cross-cultural communication, but inopportune or inappropriate speaking, the improper habits of expression。
