Title: On the Symbolic Function of Water Element In the Movie Big Fish
Abstract：
Artistic works have life, the publicity of emotion and amazing infectivity. In the process of expressing emotion with symbols, it will necessarily appear the reticent phenomenon. Abstract symbol is a tool, which can show a richer connotation, and make the art show the touching charm. Directed by the famous Hollywood director Tim Burton, and adapted from Daniel Wallace's novel of the same name, the film big fish inherits this way. The director uses many approaches of symbolism in this story to depict a fairy tale world, especially prominent in the performance of the "water" element. This paper is about the "water" image in the film big fish from the perspective of cultural symbolism to explore the cultural significance that the images of "water" constructs under different backgrounds.

1. Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Tim Burton (Aug.25th, 1958 - ) is a famous American film director who was born in the Burbank in California. This talented man could only express his perspectives of life and the world through drawing pictures because he was deeply affected by the closed and lonely childhood. Burton had been living in his little private world until he obtained the scholarship from Disney while learning in California Institute of the Arts. This fund was used to support young animators to realize their dreams. From this moment, Burton formally became an animator of Disney before he turning into a director.
The Film Big Fish
The surface meaning of this movie shows a beautiful fairy tale about Familial Affection. When Edward was young, he liked talking to his son William about his legendary experience. He claimed that when he traveled for selling in Alabama, he experienced many lustrous, dazzling, magical and absurd events. He insisted that he was a big fish and his life cannot leave water. When Will grew up, he thought the character of his father is vanity and rhetoric and he just wanted to hide the true of himself. So the relationship between father and son gradually alienated. Until his father had cancer, the son came back to his family and found the true father behind these strange stories.
1.2 Research Issue
Symbolism is a technique of expression, which also appears in a number of English films. Both in the development of the plots and the language statement of characters, it plays many important roles in the films. This paper attempts to combine the symbolic function of water element in cultural images with the cinematographic work in order to show the significance of water in western culture, explore how to make the plot development reasonable and rigorous through symbolization and help people have a more detailed interpretation of this kind of work.
