The dissertation contains four chapters. Chapter one is an introduction which includes background information, the purpose of the present research, methodology and the organization of the dissertation. Chapter two is the theoretical framework of cohesion and coherence, which contains the development of cohesion and coherence and the introduction of five cohesive devices. Chapter three is a detailed contrastive study of cohesive devices between English and Chinese in terms of Oliver Twist, which is the core of the dissertation. Chapter four is the conclusion. It includes major findings made by the research and the applications of this research.
