Abstract In literary works, dialects always play an important role that can’t be replaced. Readers can learn deeply about the local culture and the characters’ images. However, because of the differences between cultures and regions, it is hard for foreign readers to totally understand the meanings of dialects. Therefore, right strategies for dialect translation is essential.42623
This thesis tries to take the famous skopos theory as the basis to study on dialect translation. To be more typical, this thesis takes Red Sorghum--Mo Yan’s masterpiece as an example. Firstly, it pides these dialects in Red Sorghum into three types--single words, phrases and proverbs. And then, it summarizes three main way used by the translator Howard Goldblatt --the first way is using some similar words and sentences to replace these dialects in source texts; the second way is creating some new words or giving some new meanings to English words; the third way is using English to explain these dialects. According to skopos theory, this thesis values these three ways from aspects of culture spread and acceptance abilities of target readers. By that, this thesis aim to perfect dialect translation in literary works and provide a new angle for translators to find some ways to not only reduce the loss of source culture, but also help target readers better understand the source text.
