Famous linguistic River believed that the key to a successful use a foreign language is to master enough vocabulary: “Without vocabulary, there won’t be the ideas of to use the structure and functions one has learnt.” Wilkins (1972) pointed the significance of vocabulary: “Without grammar very little can be conveyed; without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed.” Another researcher Zimmerman (1998) said, “Vocabulary is central to language and is of great significance to language learners”.
2.2.1 The Demand Vocabulary in New NECS2011
In English language learning, vocabulary plays a definitely important role because without a solid vocabulary, one cannot convey his message efficiently or express his ideas in both oral as well as in written forms. The lack of sufficient vocabulary will bring obstacles in every process of language learning.
According to the vocabulary standard of language knowledge objectives in New National English Curriculum Standard 2011, a junior high school student is supposed to learn to use about 1,500 -1,600 words and 200-300 idioms and regular collocations when he finishes his compulsory education at grade 9. To a senior high school student, the numbers go to 3,000 and 400-500. The New NECS2011 also emphasized the importance to cultivate students’ overall language ability. Vocabulary, like bricks in a tall building, provides a solid foundation to language learning. The lack of sufficient vocabulary will bring obstacles in every process of language learning.
