1.1 The Definition of Family Education
Family education is the education from parents in family life and it will make a huge difference to the children. From the moment of a baby’s birth, family education shapes his personality and character. Family has become the paradise where children can grow up. Similarly, their parents are children’s first teachers. These children naively pay attention to the things that happened to them. During this period, children gradually know the real world. Of course, what they are familiar with is their parents’ actions and speech. And it is their behaviors that make children learn how to distinguish beauty from ugliness, good and evil. A good family education is just like a guiding star, keeping leading us onto new paths. Thus parents should try to set a good example for children.
1.2 The Current Situation of Family Education in China and America
As a saying goes “A good beginning is half done”. Family education exactly is one of the keys which can lead to success. However, the current family education in China is not going well. Parents’ cultural quality and the relationship between members of the family are closely bound up with family education. Children have no choice to choose which family they can live in but to be obedient to destiny. If children’s parents have higher education level, they will get more opportunity to receive good education.
By contrast, some children who live in a family with low cultural quality aren’t so fortunate. It may also be said harmonious emotion between family members can also have effect on children’s personality and character.
Back to American family education, it can be described as independence of inpiduality and democratic openness. American family education is aimed at cultivating children’s pioneering spirit and competition ability with which parents hope their children can earn their own living. Parents encourage their children to become independent enough and be responsible for themselves. Families in America believe in democracy and freedom. Children have right to decide what they like to do and what they don’t like. The relationship between them are both family and friend. Therefore, this kind of family education is open.
