An Analysis of Hawthorne’s The Birth-Mark from Feminist Perspective Abstract Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) is one of the greatest American romantic and symbolism novelists in the nineteenth Century, who is also considered as the pioneer of American psychoanalysis novels. Hawthorne’s works belong to romanticism, or rather, dark romanticism. With the publication of The Scarlet Letter, he secured permanent glory in the literary, and he influenced many writers in his time and later generations. The Scarlet Letter is one of Hawthorne’s masterpieces, his many other famous short stories, such as Minister’s Black Veil, Twice-told Tales, Mosses from an Old Manse, also have attracted many scholars’ attention．By contrast, The Birth-Mark is less noticed. It gives people a deep impression and tells a tragic and thought -provoking story. This thesis consists of three parts: first part makes a brief introduction, which mainly introduces the background of the writer and literature review and makes a synopsis of The Birth-Mark. The second part is body, which includes three chapters and analyzes The Birth-Mark from a feminist perspective: chapter one analyzes female’s society status in such a male-dominated society. Chapter two analyzes female’s attitude in marriage. Through this short story, it shows that female compromise easily in marriage. Chapter three mainly explores protagonists’ desire of pursuing perfection. This thesis aims to interpret The Birth-Mark from the feminist point of view, to explore the reason of why the heroine accepted fatal experiment or why the hero undertake fatal experiment, so as to advocate cherishing today’s feminist situation and keep the awakening of women awareness.47210

从女性主义分析霍桑作品《胎记》
摘要纳撒尼尔•霍桑是美国19世纪最伟大的小说家之一，是浪漫主义和象征主义小说的主要代表人物。他是美国心理分析小说的开创者。随着他的最著名的小说《红字》的出版，霍桑一举成名，在文学领域占有了一席之地。霍桑一生中创作了7部长篇小说和140多篇的短篇小说本品论文分析的小说《胎记》就收集在短篇小说《古屋青苔》中。《胎记》是一篇令人震撼的带有浓烈悲剧性的短篇小说，小说男主人公阿尔莫想要与自然较量去除妻子脸上的胎记，最后因为他的狂傲自大，对科学盲目的盲目追求，对妻子的强烈掌控欲导致了妻子乔治安娜的死亡。论文主要包括三个部分：第一部分对作品和作者的简单介绍，作品的创造背景、小说的简要概述和思想的来源、回顾前人对小说的研究。第二部分是主体部分，从女性主义角度来分析作品《胎记》，这个部分也分三个模块。首先从小说背景角度来分析分析女性在当时的地位如何，并与男性地位作比较。再是从女主人公的性格上分析小说中女性在婚姻的妥协，在对男性与女性的婚姻观做个比较。最后分析男女主人公的一个追求完美的共性，两者追求中的不同。第三部分是总结部分，从上述中看出女主人公是当时社会体制下产物，缺乏自我意识，视为男性为天，这样导致女性的悲剧性。为避免这样的悲剧轮番上演，要提倡女性在任何条件下都不能放弃自我。
