II. American Dream
2.1The Meaning of American Dream
Broadly speaking, the American Dream refers to a kind of national ideals and values of democracy, equality and freedom. This philosophy is reflected in Declaration of Independence in the United States. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that is, all men are born equal, and God gives them inalienable rights: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In addition, the constitution of the United States also made more specific explanation on this idea. The constitution made clear that it should ensure fairness, promote the well-being of all citizens and protect citizens freedom. Therefore, the core idea of the American Dream can be summarized as follows: (1) equality; (2) freedom and justice; (3) everyone has the right to pursue happiness and equal opportunities. (Calder,2003).The three ideals are mutually complementary to each other. The first two is the prerequisite of achieving the third ideal, that is the constitution of the United States guarantees each citizen’s equal rights to make sure that each American can succeed through their own efforts.
