In recent years, especially after the new curriculum reform, junior high school English teaching has been obviously improved and enhanced, but there are still some problems and deficiencies to be resolved. From the current situation of English teaching in junior high school, this article analyzes the main problems which exist in the current English teaching, and gives some effective strategies. Junior English teaching occupies a very important position in the whole system of English teaching. The teaching effect of English in this period is not only related to the students’ English learning foundation and the ability of learning English, but also affects the students’ interest in English learning in the future. Therefore, in junior middle school English teaching stage, the instructor must have a profound understanding of the importance of the teaching during this period, the teachers need to seize the students’ psychological and prepare for effective teaching. “English Teaching Syllabus for junior middle school nine years of full-time compulsory education” (Revised Edition) pointed out: “the purposes of English course in the compulsory education stage are to cultivate and stimulate the students’ interest in learning; to help students build self-confidence; to develop good study habits and autonomous learning ability; to establish the sense of language and to obtain the ability of using English; to lay the foundation for communication and the sustainable development of the students.” The instruction of the teaching purpose points out the correct direction and guiding ideology, and it is the direction of the junior middle school English teaching activity. However, in the actual teaching, the teaching process of junior middle school English goes against the teaching object, and the teaching effects are far from the teaching demands. So there are many problems in junior middle school English teaching. Meanwhile in this paper it talks about the advantages and disadvantages of exam-oriented education and also gives some effective ways to solve the disadvantages of the exam-oriented education.
Ⅱ.The Problems of English Teaching in Junior Middle School
In the framework of exam-oriented education, junior middle school English teaching has already received much attention. The quality of teaching is constantly improving, but due to the influence of various factors, especially under the influence of the “exam-oriented education”. The main purpose of English teaching is to impart knowledge; however, teachers always emphasis on students’ grades and ignore the overall development of students, they only focus on imparting basic knowledge and ignore training students’ listening, speaking, reading, writing and language communication ability and so on. This phenomenon is undoubtedly contrary to the law of language teaching. As a result, teachers always put the interesting practice of language lesson into a boring class. It results that students learn English for many years, in the end, students cannot see or talk, all of those problems lead to serious landslide of teaching quality.
2.1 Two Questions in English Teaching
There are two questions in English teaching. The first one is short of teachers and the second one is the lag of teaching method. Now each junior middle school English teachers has at least two classes, even worse, some English teachers also teach other subjects, which leads to the English teachers’ heavy course task. English teacher has little time to think about other things, which will impact on the students’ extracurricular activities. At the same time, it is bad for the professional development of English teachers. Now there is a serious crisis that teachers still hold old ideas, and they do not pay attention to the students’ interest in learning English. Teachers do not have new teaching methods and flexible teaching organization, they fail to mobilize students to actively participate in classroom activities, teachers always ignore students’ unintentional learning and pay attention to explaining new words and grammatical rules. They also ignore encouraging beginners of English students.
