摘要美学是研究美以及人对美的感受的一门学科，然而翻译美学则是美学与翻译研究的结合。运用翻译美学理论探索散文翻译，无论是从理论上还是实践上都有一定的借鉴意义。有鉴于此，本文作者将拟运用刘宓庆教授提出的翻译美学理论研究张培基教授翻译的《英译中国现代散文选（一）》，对张译本中的散文主要从翻译美学理论中的美学客体、美学再现的角度，从语音、词汇、文化等各个层面，进行细致分析。通过分析，可以看出好的散文译文一定要尽可能的再现原文的各种美学价值。60051

1. Introduction 

What are essays? In A Handbook to Literature, C Hugh Homan gives a definition: “In a broad sense, the term is used in all forms of written or spoken language which has no regular rhythmic pattern”. (Homan, 1981: 354) “Essays, different from poetry, lie in that they are not subject to measure, rhythm or rhyme”. (Cudden, 1998: 705) 

As Chinese essays draw more and more attention internationally, essay translation is becoming a hot subject. Having long been committed to translating modern Chinese essays, Professor Zhang Peiji has translated a wealth of essay works and has published four volumes of Selected Modern Chinese Essays. Over the past few years, a number of papers have studied Zhang Peiji’s essay translation. Most of them, however, are comments of his essay translation or the comparison with those of other translators’. There are few papers to explore ways for the outstanding contribution with the focus on the aesthetic representation in his essay translation. 

According to Liu Miqing, the marriage of translation and aesthetics is one of the most typical characteristics of Chinese translation theories. As such, this thesis conducts a tentative analysis on Zhang Peiji’s Modern Chinese Essays 1 on the basis of the translation aesthetics theory presented by Professor Liu Miqing. 

2. Liu Miqing’s Theory of Translation Aesthetics

Liu Miqing, a celebrated translation theorist, has long been devoted to translation studies. His translation theory does much to improve the international status of Chinese traditional translation theory. In An Introduction to Translation Aesthetics, Liu Miqing holds that the main task of translation aesthetics is to analyze, demonstrate and solve the aesthetic matters. Liu’s thought on translation aesthetics serves as guidance in literary translation. Only when translators fully master these aesthetic translation requirements and principles, can they analyze the aesthetic constituents in the original text and translate them into the target language. Based on this, translators should do their utmost to represent the original aesthetic values.
