Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Research Background

   As the Chinese economy has been globalized and greatly developed, there are more and more international co-operations in which English major students and English translators or interpreters are needed. What’s more, English is the most popular second-language used around the world. More than 60 percent letters and mail and 50 percent newspapers and magazines are written in English. Most programming languages are English. Therefore, more than 75 percent Chinese undergraduate universities have opened English majors. Totally, there are more than 990 universities have English majors. English takes unique importance in the development of economy, culture, policy and other aspects.

I am one of students who are major in English. During my years of college life, I have token a great amount of English courses. After being trained for four years, I gradually master in fundamental English skills, such as listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating. In the process of my English learning, I have used many tools to further improve my English, such as paper dictionaries, Internet, references and etc. Among those useful and abundant tools, I find online dictionary is the one that I use most frequently.
