Abstract Peal S. Buck was the first American woman who won the Nobel Prize in literature. Different from other western writer, she had many years of life experience in China, and she accepted the influence of both Chinese and Western culture. She created a lot of works according to her own experience. Therefore, the China’s images in her works were more close to reality, and her first novel The Good Earth was widely welcomed by many foreign people due to her vivid description of Chinese peasants. However, she returned to America and never returned to China. Then after hearing that China was suffering from the Anti-Japanese War, she wrote Dragon Seed in support of China. After reading these two novels, we can find that the Chinese peasants’ images changed a lot in these two novels. This paper will analyze the changes in the main characters in these two novels and dissect the reasons for these changes with changes in her life and emotions to make us better understand her strong emotions to China. 69211

摘要赛珍珠是第一位获得诺贝尔文学奖的美国女性作家,与其他西方作家不同的是,赛珍珠由于有在中国生活多年的经历,她作品中的中国形象显得贴近现实,她的第一部小说《大地》就因为对中国农民细致生动的刻画就在国外受到了广泛欢迎。赛珍珠回到美国以后,得知中国爆发了抗日战争,于是她创作了《龙子》。我们注意到,这两部小说中的中国农民形象出现了许多变化,本文将通过对两部小说中主要人物形象的分析,探究其笔下人物形象产生变化的原因,从而更好地理解作者对中国难以割舍的感情。

Introduction
1. Background of the study
Faced with the trend of globalization, it has a strong significance in doing further research into Pearl S. Buck and her works. As a person who devoted her whole life to cultural exchanges between China and the United States, Pearl S. Buck was a Nobel Prize winner in literature, she wrote a lot of works, especially novels, which made outstanding contributions in culture exchanges between countries. Her two novels The Good Earth and Dragon Seed were written in different time, the former one was completed when Pearl S. Buck lived in China and the latter one was finished when Pearl S. Buck had returned to the United States. These two novels both described Chinese peasants but these characters differ with each other in many ways.

From analyzing the changes in the main characters in Pearl S.Buck’s The Good Earth and Dragon Seed, we can find the differences in her impression to China’s images and her understandings of Chinese culture, at the same time we can probe into her emotions from different circumstances, from which we can also feel her strong China complex and her unique views on both China’s images and Western images as an American author with both China and West cultural background.
