2。The Analysis of the Character of Heathcliff

    Usually, family or servants are hard to get on well with Heathcliff because of his cruel and cloudy character 。 We can get a good deal of enlightenment from his name Heathcliff 。  A heath is an area of open land covered with rough grass or heather and with very few trees or bushes。 A cliff is a high area of land with a very steep side, especially one next to the sea。 His name remind me of wild nature 。 It is hard for critics to define Heathcliff as a hero or a bully。 It is not unusual for one person's hero to be another person's bully。 Heathcliff are complex。 AS mentioned in Jane Austin's classic novel Pride and Prejudice, intricate characters are the most amusing。 They have at least that advantage。 

2。1 Love 

    Heathcliff’s love mainly embody in 4 persons 。They are Mr Earnshaw , Catherine, Hindley and Nelly。 Next, I will analyze it orderly。  By the describing of Heathcliff’s childhood, writer did not definitely tell us Heathcliff’s virtue, but with others’ protection, the writer gave us a hint that primitive Heathcliff was kind and remarkably hardy (Marianne Thormahlen 86)。 

    Heathcliff was found in the street by Mr 。Earnshaw 。 Mr。 Earshaw brought Heathcliff home , brought him up and showed him the utmost solicitude。 However,  Mr 。Earnshaw had not bargained on the mad jealousy which all family developed。 Mrs Earnshaw and her son purposely made difficulties for Heathcliff all the time。 Meanwhile , Heathcliff suffered insults in silence and did not complain anything with Mr。 Earnshaw  。He could have complained but he did not 。 Instead of complaining about what's wrong, be grateful for what's right 。A good quality could be seen here is that he had a heart of gratitude 。 

    Meanwhile, there was a girl he deeply loved ,Catherine。 His love for Catherine even exceed his love for Mr。 Earnshaw 。 Even at the beginning, they had an unfriendly encounter。 According to the plot ,little Catherine entirely refused to accept Heathcliff in bed with them, or even in their room。 But it soon has ripened into that engrossing feeling。 The most happiness thing for them was running across the wilds。 Heathcliff was willing to do everything for Catherine regardless of suffering from painful punishments。 When Catherine passed away, Heathcliff expressed his despair。 After her death。 He always thought of her and the happy time they spent with each other 。This was the love Heathcliff for Catherine。 She was his mate during his whole childhood。 She is his pillar in his spirit world 。I believe most readers can not forget the moment when Heathcliff looked out of the windows, saw nothing and yelled painfully。 This plot was an accurate reflection of the Heathcliff’ mood。 

    “He got on to the bed, and wrenched open the lattice, bursting, as he pulled at it, into an uncontrollable passion of tears。 `Come in! come in!' he sobbed。 `Cathy, do come。 Oh do--once more! Oh! my heart's darling! hear me this time, Catherine, at last!”

    For a long time Hindley had been very cruel 。 Nelly once said that Hindley was enough to make a fiend of a saint。 Heatchcliff hated Hindley and swore to hit it back one day 。 One day, something interesting happened 。Hindley was drunk and nearly fell down the stairway。 Almost by reflex ,Heathcliff arrived there and accepted drunk Hindley。 Heathcliff felt contradictory because he stopped his revenge。 Even Heathcliff was tortured by Hindley, ,Heathcliff was still very kind in his inner mind。

    Nelly was arranged By Mr。 EarnShaw to take care of Heathcliff when he was ill 。In fact, Nelly was unwilling to look after the peculiar kid because Heathcliff had messed up enough in the family 。 In fact , Nelly really did a lot of things to hurt Heathcliff and tried to squeeze him out of the family。 But Heathcliff firmly believed that she was so kind and he really appreciated for her help。 When he returned back and took revenge , he did not hurt Nelly 。He had a heart of gratitude and really appreciate the people around 。  Above all, there are the twinkling points of Heathcliff。
