Title The Pragmatic Identity of Advice-givers in Academic Verbal Interaction
Abstract While pragmatic identity construction has been investigated intensely in recent years, there is relatively insufficient research on identity construction in academic verbal interaction。 Pragmatic Identity studies how these dynamically constructed identities in context are employed to covey meaning and realize communicators’ illocutionary or/and relational purpose。 Based on corpus in the tenth Jiangsu university foreign language major’s postgraduate academic forum, the thesis analyzes the identity types, construction strategies and pragmatic motivations。 Results shows that advice-givers construct expert identities, teacher identities, peer researcher identities, and layperson identities (Ren, 2013), etc。 Through choosing and constructing perse identities in this academic discourse, the advice-givers not only perform speech act of suggestion, criticism and praise, but also tactically persuade students to adopt their views by displaying their academic competence and personalities。 This study can not only enrich identity research, especially in academic verbal interaction, but also provide some helpful references to researchers who attempt to give advices in the similar settings。
