Ever since the publication of the first volume, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, in 1997, Harry Potter series has been winning worldwide popularity。 Up until 2015, it has been translated into 75 languages and been sold about 520 million copies in over 200 countries。 And not surprisingly the box office of Harry Potter movies hits 4。3 billion dollars in solely U。S。A。
Not only huge market values does the popularity of Harry Potter bring, but it also contributes to the development of related industries。 Comparing with the accumulation of wealth which is just the external manifestation of the success of Harry Potter, the cultural significance brought by it is more thought-provoking。文献综述
In this novel, there is a magic world where wizards, witches, goblins, ghosts and other magical creatures live, coexisting with the real world where muggle (non-magical people)live。 The main story centers around Harry Potter, an orphan, who discovers his wizard identity at the 11th birthday。 Before the invitations from the magic world reaches him, he has been living with the Dusleys who hate everything about magic and do all they can to keep Harry from knowing anything about it。 On his birthday, Harry is told that his magic talent is inborn and can be developed with training at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he attends classes, starts his magic journey with his best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger and through a series of ordeals,Harry grows into an excellent wizard。 The main focus of the story is on the long-lasting fight between Harry and Voldemort, whose aim is to become immortal and purify the magic blood lineage by killing muggles and other good wizards and witches。 In the last volume of Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry defeated Voldemort by his bravery and wisdom。

Born in Chipping in the southwest England, on July 31, 1965, Joanne Kathleen Rowling, author of the popular Harry Potter series, took her degree in French and Classics at Exeter University Rowling。 She was once an English teacher teaching in Portugal and a secretary attaining the office positions in different companies and universities before writing Harry Potter series。 During those years, though she had wrote short stories and novels for adult readers, she never contribute them to publishers。 The idea that we could have a child escapes from the confines of the real world and goes into magic world suddenly occurred to her on the train from Manchester to London in the summer of 1990。

Seemingly isolated yet related to the real world, lots of elements in this imaginary world of Harry Potter can be traced back to English cultural origins, such as its customs, rules,school。。。 and names which among numerous factors are going to be the major focus of this thesis。
