Wilde’s first novel The Picture of Dorian Gray was published in 1891。 The creating inspiration of the novel came from Wilde’s a visit to an old famous Painter。 The male model of that old painter looked young and beautiful, so Wilde could not help but sigh: “what a pity that even such a beautiful creature would be still old one day。” The painter replied: “Yes, what if the picture replaces him to grow old while he stays forever young。” Later Wilde created the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and named after the painter in order to appreciate him。 On the other hand, Wilde was disgusted with the British social philistine philosophy and hypocritical morality in the 19th century; he was to use the ‘beauty’ of art against the ‘ugly’ in reality through the novel。 He asserted that beauty is higher than everything, art is higher than life, the beauty and value of art does not exist in life and nature, art should be detached from life。
