3。 Henry’s Projection on Dorian Gray
In the novel, Henry and Dorian have a close relationship or we can say that Henry acts as Dorian’s mentor who constantly gives Dorian life and artistic instruction。 However, it is universally acknowledged that Dorian’s decadence is directly caused by Henry’s toxic influence。 At their first meeting Dorian is certainly wonderfully handsome, with his finely-curved scarlet lips, his frank blue eyes, and his crisp gold hair。 There is something in his face that made one trust him at once。 And Dorian’s rose-red youth and rose-white boyhood are full of passion。 Henry could not help liking the tall, graceful young man as this man’s romantic olive-colored face and worn expression interests him。 He is excited at Dorian’s beauty but feels afraid and ashamed as Dorian reveals him something that he never owns---beauty and youth。 Then he gives Dorian a terrible warning of youth’s brevity with his strange panegyric in order to seek to dominate him。 Henry would make that wonderful spirit his own as there is something fascinating in this son of Love and Death。 In science, Dorian is more like a subject made to Henry’s hand which is about whether we could ever make psychology so absolute a science。 It seems to turn out that Henry would achieve rich and fruitful results。
