Abstract In the field of translation, whether to adopt foreignization strategy or domestication strategy has become one of the hot debates in translation practice。 The battle between the domestication and foreignization not only lies in the outer of the works, including language, structure and writing style, but also lies in the inner, such as social culture and political ideology。 The different versions of the same original work preventing the reader from completely and accurately understanding the original meaning。 This paper will begin with the definition of domestication and foreignization，then introduce the researches that previous scholars have made。 Next, the paper will take two versions of Washington Square as examples to elaborate principle in choosing translation strategies。 Based on the analysis and findings, the author favors the principle that foreignization should be dominantly used with domestication as a complementary approach in translation。75975

摘要在翻译领域，采用归化策略还是异化策略，在翻译实践里已经成为热门争论。归化策略和异化策略的争论不仅表现在作品的外在，如语言，结构和文体；还表现在作品的核心，如社会文化和政治意识。同一作品的不同译本使得读者很难精准的了解原著的意蕴。本文首先介绍异化和归化的定义,以及前人的相关研究，然后通过分析小说《华盛顿广场》两个不同译本中异化和归化的实例来阐述翻译策略的应用原则，基于研究结论，作者认为在翻译时应以异化为主，归化为辅。

1。 Introduction

This dissertation aims to conduct a comparative analysis on two Chinese versions of Washington Square from the perspectives of domestication and foreignization。 Via the comparison, the author attempts to demonstrate which method should be taken during the process of translation。 The article is pided into four sections: the first section is the introduction which generally describes the whole passage。 The second section is a literature review which states what studies have been made by the predecessors about domestication and foreignization, the author also provides some related information about the book and its translated version。 The third section investigates the application of foreignization and domestication in translation。 In this section, two Chinese versions of this novel will be used as an example to clarify and compare the two basic translation strategies: domestication and foreignization。 In the last section, a conclusion will be made about the major findings, limitations and future tendency in translation practice from the writer’s point of view。文献综述

2。1An overview study of domestication and foreignization

In the 18th century, a German scholar Schleiermacher put forward a rough theory about domestication and foreignization in the lecture。 “There are only two; either the translator leaves the author in peace, as much as possible, and moves the reader towards him; or he leaves the reader in peace, as much as possible, and moves the author towards him”。 (Venuti 19-20) Generally speaking, foreignization gives the translator an expressing method adapting to the original text and will lead readers close to the author; while domestication allows the translator to pay more attention to the readers by resorting more structures familiar to readers。 Inspired by Schleiermacher’s thoughts, in twentieth Century, the Italian American translation scholar：Venuti proposed the concept of domestication and foreignization in his book The Translator Invisibility: A History of Translation。  Since domestication and foreignization serve as the basic translation strategies。 They always guide the translator in dealing with the practical problems encountered in the course of translation。 There exist conflicting opinions on these two strategies in western and China translation circles。
