Abstract Matthew Arnold is a great British Victorian poet and leading social critic in Victorian Period。 Many of Matthew Arnold’s literary works reflect the contradictory psychology in the 19 century, of which Dover Beach ranks high。 This thesis takes Matthew Arnold’s Dover Beach as an example。 It analyzes this poem to reflect the problem of the crisis of faith at that time from three aspects: the Victorian Period background, the interpretation of the poem and the phenomenon of the crisis of faith。 Then, this thesis supplies suggestions for the crisis of faith: when we face the crisis of faith, we should keep an optimistic attitude。76026

1。 Introduction
Matthew Arnold is a great Victorian poet and a leading social critic。 His poetry foresees the “wasteland” of the twentieth century。 One of the most famous of his poem is Dover Beach。 It touches the major concerns of Mid-Victorian writing。 The poem by Matthew Arnold is filled with a sense of sadness, expressing the poet’s bitter disappointment over modern civilization and describing the social disorder at that time and the sincere faith that people had gradually got lost through the figurative language and his affection involvement and exposed that the English people was on the verge of collapse by different images of sea in combination with the use of symbolism。 Comparing the past society with the present, the author pointed out that the people’s mentality had been back to the non-religious age when they lived in the age without love but terror’s fight which resulted in being contradictory in their inner minds。 Then the poet finally turns to love as the saving emotion in the poem 。

Matthew Arnold is a great Victorian poet, his many literary works have been studied in recent years。 In abroad, different people, different views。 To Carlyle, for example, In the civilization of sorrow severely criticized that the British people addicted in liberalism phenomenon at that time。 He holds that the current Britain faces two big threats, one is the free competition, for their own profit concept, its concrete manifestation is the liberalism。 Another threat is a critical worship of material and money。 Nevertheless, Arnold clearly pointed out that liberalism will let British society slide into the Abyss。 So culture should be the very means and tool to avoid that danger。 论文网
