The Non-equivalence Between English and Chinese Idioms from the Cross-culture Perspective

I。 Introduction

Idiom comes from the national culture and daily life of native speakers。 It not only contains the features of the language but also indicates all fields of the local culture including society, history, customs, etc。 Native speakers use plentiful idioms in their oral and written language。 The editor of Longman Language Activator, Della Summers (1993) argued that many lexical items were not single words but phrases, which meant that native speakers often communicate by using phrases instead of single words with each other。 The proper adoption of idioms in writing and speech makes articles absorbing and prompts influence of the communication。 It is universally acknowledged that idiom is more impressive than any other form of expression, and it has identification characteristics of a language and culture。 Usually it has connotations instead of simple sum of each word in the idiom。 In normal cases, idioms have lively images and previous characteristics of their national culture。论文网
