A Critical Analysis of Female Roles in Fingersmith from the Perspective of Social Gender

Abstract This article analyses critically the female roles in Fingersmith from the perspective of social gender and explores their personality changes and character development。 In Fingersmith, the great British writer, Sarah Waters, has created a well-structured history thriller by means of the depiction burglar Victorian culture。 The story takes lesbian romance as the theme, expressing lesbian protagonists’ fight against the home arrest and seeking self-identity in a patriarchal society and under the sexual orientation advantages。 From the first-person narrative, this story reflects their arduous struggle for their love of freedom and fate。 87097

摘 要本文从社会性别角度入手，研究Fingersmith这一书中的女性角色，探究其性格变化及人物发展。在Fingersmith这一书中，英国作家萨拉·沃特斯透过描写维多利亚时代的窃贼文化，创造出一个结构严谨的历史悬疑故事。在这个故事中，她以表达女同性恋之间的恋爱为主题，在文中女同性恋主人公在男权社会与性取向优势中对抗软禁、寻觅自我身份认同、故事叙述由第一人称树立话语权的进程，反应了她们在艰苦际遇中对恋爱、自力、自在的寻求。
