Abstract Published in 1891, Tess of the D'Urbervilles(TD) was considered as the most charming novel of Thomas Hardy。 In this novel, he makes a great deal of description of natural background。 Scenery description in TD is closely coherent with Tess’ tragic fate。 This paper attempts to analyze the landscape description in TD, and abstract the functions of the scenery description in it。87222
Besides introduction, literature review and conclusion, this paper mainly consists of two parts。 Part one focuses on the detailed analysis of scenery description in TD。 In this part, this paper analyzes it from two aspects。 First is analysis of scenery description through location change。 In the novel, there is a continuous space transfer including five places。 The changing of places suggests the changing of Tess’ fate。 Hardy successfully uses setting or atmosphere to symbolize association between the changing of scenes and the changing of Tess’ fate。 Second is analysis of scenery description through season change。 The alternation of seasons is consistent with Tess’ experiences。 The hopeful spring, the rich summer, the lonely autumn and the cruel winter are all closely linked with Tess’ fate, which helps readers respond to her situation at different periods。  
Part two are general functions of scenery description extracted from TD。 This paper finally gives four main functions including infective function, symbolic function, predictive function and satiric function。

论《德伯家的苔丝》中的景物描写的作用
摘  要出版于1891年，《德伯家的苔丝》被认为是托马斯·哈代最具魅力的小说。小说中，他大量地描绘自然背景，这些景物又与苔丝的悲惨命运紧密相关。本文将对《苔丝》中的风景描写进行分析，并从中提炼出其作用。
除了介绍，文献综述及结尾，本文还包含两大部分。第一部分主要解决对《苔丝》中景物描写的细节分析。本文从方面入手:第一，从地点转换的视角分析作品中的景物描写。小说中，有一个包含了五个地点的空间转换。地点的变化暗示了苔丝命运的变化。哈代成功地使用背景或者氛围象征景物变化与苔丝命运变化之间的联系。第二，从季节转换的角度分析作品中的景物描写。小说中季节的更替与苔丝的经历相一致。充满希望的春天，富饶的夏天，孤寂的秋天及严酷的冬天都与苔丝的命运息息相关。这是读者真切体会到苔丝在不同阶段的处境与感受。
第二部分主要是从《苔丝》中提炼出的景物描写的作用，本文最终给出四个主要作用，包括感染性作用，象征性作用，预示性作用及讽刺性作用。
