Title An Analysis of Types of Lexical Chunks in English Majors’ Argumentative Writings
Abstract
Taking the argumentative writings written by English sophomores in a regular class and an experimental class as data, the thesis explores the use of types of lexical chunks in English majors’ argumentative writings. Based on the definitions and classifications of lexical chunks made in previous studies, the author extracts seven types of lexical chunks from the texts. The thesis aims to get a clear picture of characteristics in using types of lexical chunks in argumentative writings of English majors, probe into the relationship between using types of lexical chunks and language proficiency, and analyze the reasons for mistakes in using lexical chunks. The findings indicate that lexical chunks are distributed in the same way in argumentative writings written by students of different language proficiency; however, students of better language proficiency use more persified lexical chunks than those of lower language proficiency. Students of different language proficiency all have made similar mistakes in using lexical chunks. This shows that students of higher language proficiency also lack grammatical accuracy in using lexical chunks.

1 Introduction
People have many fixed usages in language use, just like their naturally-formed habits in their behaviors. Since some communication contexts in our daily life occur frequently and are stale, people have relatively fixed communicative structures in these contexts. For example, when people share ideas with their friends, they often adopt these structures: I think that, I hold that... These are called lexical chunks. With the rapid development of corpus linguistics, the status and role of lexical chunks have aroused concern of more and more linguists. There is a wide consensus in the field of second language teaching and study that lexical chunks are playing an important role in second language acquisition.
However, researches on abilities of using lexical chunks of English majors are not quite commonly seen in our country, especially on abilities of using lexical chunks in students’ argumentative writings. This research was conducted among English majors with the aim to get a clear picture of the use of types of lexical chunks in English majors’ argumentative writings, probe into the relationship between use of types of chunks and second language proficiency and analyze the reasons for mistakes in the use of chunks to help students have a better command of chunks and greatly improve their writings. 英语专业学生议论文写作中词块类型的调查研究:http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_13227.html
