摘 要随着人类文明的不断进步，语言交际成为人类文持社会和人际关系的重要手段。委婉语是人类使用语言过程中的一种普遍现象，它应用于社会生活的诸多领域，它的产生和应用与社会现象息息相关。委婉语在语言交际中起到缓和作用，能够避免使用某些词语引起不快或尴尬。本文从委婉语特征入手，结合其功能分析了委婉语在不同的语言环境中的应用，并运用认知调整交际中的礼貌程度，进而达到成功交际的目的。24036

Abstract
With the continuous progress of human civilization, human language communication has become an important means to maintain the social and interpersonal relationship. Euphemism is a common phenomenon in all languages. It is applied to many fields of social life and its production and application are closely related to social phenomenon. Euphemism plays a moderating role in language communication, and it can avoid the using of certain words which may cause unpleasant and embarrassing. This article starts from the euphemism characteristics, combined with the functional analysis of the application of euphemism in different language environment, to make a clear perceive of euphemism. It helps to adjust the politeness degree of cognitive in communication, so as to achieve the purpose of successful communication.

I. Introduction

    Euphemism is a common language phenomenon and in the world, each nation has its own euphemism. because of life habit, custom differences and different cultural background of every nation, the usage of euphemism is also different. However, the common characteristic of euphemism to avoid embarrassment or unpleasant and harsh reality predicts that the euphemism is an appropriate language form for people to conduct social communication. Euphemism is not only a linguistic phenomenon, but also a cultural phenomenon. The relevant theories of pragmatics will be applied in the paper to analyze the theory system of English euphemism. It is within the hope of the paper that the exploration of the function and effects of English euphemism will further the understanding of those who learn English as a second language about English euphemism so that pragmatic failures will be reduced through the smooth information transfer in cross-cultural communication.

    Euphemism is a common language phenomenon, and plays a very important role in people’s daily communication. In a sense, only to master the usage of euphemism can help us to understand its meaning more accurately. Based on the analysis of the special background of vocabularies, this paper studies the specific functions of euphemism in different communicating situations.
