Abstract John Fowles who has been labeled as a “postmodernist” writer is an crucial and influential novelist in contemporary Britain. His masterpiece, namely The French Lieutenant’s Women，upon its publication has been acclaimed by the critics. The fascinating figure which Fowles created , Sarah, successfully stages her among one of the most famous portraits in the gallery in world literature. The thesis tends to analyze the character Sarah from the perspective of feminism, paying close attention to her rebellion to the feudal women imagery in Victorian Age, and so as to explore the continuous enhancement of Sarah’s self-consciousness and her eternal pursuit of equality and freedom.
