1。1 Research background

Lexicology is one of comparatively significant parts in linguistics, and is also the center of linguistic research。 Considering its ubiquity and complexity in English, synonymy is an interesting but intricate linguistic phenomenon。 Synonyms are the words which are close in meaning, so they convey the same or nearly the same meanings。 Due to this special feature, it is difficult for English learners to indentify correctly and master them properly。 Although the English dictionaries they relay to can give some general guidance to some extent, they still cannot distinguish most of synonyms precisely because of the limitation of space and their basic retrieval function。 So it is difficult for English learners to choose the proper words to express or communicate appropriately and freely。 Besides that synonymy also troubles English teachers in illustrating and teaching。 Therefore, how to distinguish synonyms becomes much more urgent and pressing。
