Some scholars also apply some theories from other fields to SF translation, such as defamiliarization theory, which is literary theory originally。 Through defamiliarization, it could prolong readers’ appreciation time, increase their aesthetic delight and makes them own new feelings in the original world they live in。 In SF translation, it means to remain the defamiliarization style in the translated version so as to make reader at home have the similar reading experience as native readers do。
1。2 Significance of the research
Coinage is the representative of scientific factors reflected in SF at the lexical level。 It has already become one of characteristics of science fiction。 American scholar Gary Westfahl once carried out a research about coinage that he chose some work written by science fiction authors, such as Hugo Gernsback, Isaac Asimov, and William Gibson, who are famous masters in different period。 He found that one coinage appears in every 794 words on average。 That means a coinage could be found in each two pages in science fiction (1993:292)。 British scholar Peter Stockwell also pointed out that the number of coinage in SF has greatly surpassed that in mainstream literature works。 However, since it is always fictitious, require professional knowledge and ask for novelty, it is hard to translate it properly into target language。 Due to its importance and difficulty now confronted with, it is urgent to seek for rational translating strategy of coinage in SF。文献综述
Firstly, since there are few studies in this area, this research could help to make up for the vacancy in coinage translation。 It is able to provide some translation strategy and method to promote the study in coinage translation with several supporting ideas, and help to establish the systematic theory as early as possible。 With these strategies as reference, a higher-quality translated work could be provided to readers。 In addition, the finding of the research can also be applied in other fields, such as coinage in media, society and so on。 As we know, a lot of coinages are created in media and social life every day, and theirs translation still remains problems。 Last but not the least, this research will make a preparation for the translation of Chinese science fiction。 Though Chinese’s SF is still at its incipient stage, some work has attracted the world, like San Ti。 When translation problems of coinage in Chinese SF are confronted with, the research could offer some enlightenment。
