Intercultural communication was first proposed in 《The Silent Language》,published by American cultural anthropologist Edward T。 Hall, which marks the birth of intercultural communication。 Intercultural communication refers to communication between inpiduals from two or more different cultures。 Foreign intercultural communication research is from the 1950s。 Today, with the joint efforts of Chinese and foreign scholars, the theoretical basis of intercultural communication is becoming more and more solid。
In 1880, the French educator Gouin discussed the importance of culture in his book 《The Art of Teaching and Studying Language》。 In this book, writer tried to deliver such message as: cultural teaching can be put into effect in conventional curriculum through appropriate teaching method。 This was the first academic work which expounded the importance of cultural teaching in western countries。
In 1972 and 1988, the Northeast Foreign Language Teaching Conference (NECTFL) held two seminars on cultural and educational topics。 The conference reached a consensus on the importance of cultural teaching to foreign language teaching and foreign language learners。 (Zhang Hongling, 2007: 161)。 More and more foreign language educators believe that understanding foreign culture and cultural comparison is an indispensable part of language teaching, and explored cultural teaching from different perspective。
Chinese intercultural communication research started from late 1980s。 Until the 1990s,, Chinese scholars began to write and edit intercultural communication research works, and a large number of papers were published。 In the 1970s and 1980s, by the influence of Hymes et al。's view of communicative competence, the purpose of foreign language teaching was to develop learners' communicative competence and to explicitly put culture as the content of teaching。 With the rise of intercultural communication, people began to realize that language teaching must be combined with cultural teaching。
Some researchers use empirical research methods to study。 Such as Gao Yongchen (2006) uses Suzhou University English "higher requirements" class students cross-cultural communication ability of empirical research as evidence to reveal the students' problems in intercultural communication ability , put forward that the basic countermeasure for college English teaching is to develop students' intercultural ability。 Li Yuan, Fan Jieping (2007) researched the identity status of the Chinese college students before and after going abroad 。 The study shows that "pattern solid" has a relatively solid and variability, and direct contact does not digest most of the "pattern solid", but reinforces some "pattern fix" and produces a new "pattern"。文献综述
