Abstract：Studies about the subtitle translation itself and the evaluation of its quality have attracted increasing attention in the academia. The application of Skopos theory into the study of subtitle translation helps evaluating whether the target text has achieved the purpose of cultural communication between the sender and receiver of the text. This paper aims to analyze three major difficulties occurring in the process of subtitle translation from the perspective of Skopos theory by means of a case study of Downton Abbey, a popular television series broadcasted on China Central Television 8. The difficulties include: conveying the intention of source text simultaneously; overcoming cultural differences; and striking a balance between two Skopos. The findings are as follows. Firstly, to address first difficulty, the translators tend to use strategies like deletion and chunking to prevent audience from spending too much time in reading subtitles. Secondly, to overcome cultural differences in literature, the translators mainly use covering and notation so as to make the implied message in British literature to be understood and adapted to Chinese’s speaking habit. To overcome differences in social customs, the translators use addition and covering in a purpose of making audience understand the plot and spare less effort. To overcome the differences in religion, the translators use domestication to reduce the cultural distance between the two cultures. And finally, to deal with the third difficulty. striking a balance between two Skopos, the translators’ responsibility for the source text sender, and his obligation to target readers, the translators combine particular strategies such as domestication and foreignization.25957

目的论视角下影视字幕翻译研究：----以《唐顿庄园》汉译为例
摘要：近年来，国内外对字幕翻译过程以及翻译成果评估的研究越来越多。将目的论运用于该类研究中可以客观理性地进行分析字幕翻译是否达到了文化接受者和传递者对于文化交流的目的。本文旨在通过语料分析的方法，并选用英国独立电视台热门剧《唐顿庄园》在中央电视台第八频道海外剧场的字幕译本为语料，从目的论视角试析字幕翻译过程中出现的三大主要难点：瞬时传递源语意图、突破文化差异造成的理解困难、在两大目的（忠实于源语，适应于目的语）之间取得平衡。结合目的论三原则：目的原则、连贯性原则和忠实性原则、忠诚原则，分析该字幕组围绕三大难点所采取的策略的优势和不足之处。研究结果显示，该字幕组在应对瞬时传递源语意图困难时主要采用组块和省略策略；在应对文学差异造成的理解困难时主要采用替代和注释策略；在应对社会习俗差异造成的理解困难时主要采用增补和替代策略；在应对宗教差异造成的理解困难时主要采用同化策略；在应对在两大目的之间取得平衡的困难时主要采用同化和异化相结合的解决方案。
