The film Zootopia highlights struggle, persistence and dreams。 It has received high reputation and proves to be a box-office smash all over the world。 However, lacking dubbed ones, most Chinese audiences who limit to language barriers have to depend on the Chinese subtitles to enjoy the film。 Therefore, the subtitle translation is supposed to be paid much attention to。 

The new theory—eco-translatology, was put forward by Hu Gengshen, a professor in Qinghua University。 In terms of eco-translatology, translation is a kind of translator’s behavior of adaptation and selection, which was controlled by the translator, according to the original text and aimed at making transcultural information conversion come true。 Till today, eco-translatology has been applied into the translation of film titles, public signs, novels, literature works, etc。 However, so rarely happens the situation that eco-translatology is applied to the subtitle translation of English films。 Therefore, this thesis will analyze the subtitle translation of the film Zootopia from the perspective of eco-translatology and find out the adaptation and selection from linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions。

2。 Literature Review

2。1 Previous study on eco-translatology   

Although the history of eco-translatology is short, it has undergone rapid development in recent years。 Since the 1960s, Human society has started its transition from inpidual civilization to ecological civilization。 In the 21st century, people around the world are paying much attention to eco-environment and the protection of nature。 As a result, studies on eco-translatology are flourishing。 

Translation theorist Robinson Douglas has said that “the interpreter is a person with no personality traits and no self-advertisement, that’s reason of the low status of translation。” However, eco-tranlatology has given a redefinition of translation from the perspective of translators。 The theory emphasized on the leading role of translators。

Eco-translatology, a new kind of theory put forward by Hu Gengshen at the beginning of this century, has been gradually embraced by an increasing number of Chinese translators。 The theory was created based on Darwin’s “natural selection” and “survival for the fittest” as well as eastern philosophical theory and modern thoughts which have met the demands of the new era。 A researcher writes, “The theory provides a new, harmonious and multidimensional view and a brand new research paradigm for guiding translation。 It also provides new theory guidance for translation。” (Yang 9) 

Then the whole world has witnessed the rapid development of studies on eco-translatology。 Michael Cronin, director of the human science department at Dublin City University, initially put forward the word “eco-translatology”, aiming to accelerate the development of interdisciplinary research and to study new scientific translation。 In 2000, Nida wrote that to adapt to other culture, publisher’s needs, and readers’ requirements, one has to do tens of thousands of decisions like selections and settlements。 In 2002, Xu Jun claimed in The Choice in Translation that the choice of translation is the inseparable part during the whole translation process (Xun Jun，2002)。 From 2001 up to now, more than 20 theoretical papers about eco-translatology have been published by Prof。 Hu in order to fully interpret the theory of eco-translatology。 After reading these works, people are enabled to figure out the definition of eco-translatology through its basic connotation, research background and study limitations。 It is the first time in China that scholars of eco-translatology have formally assembled to talk over and exchange ideas in The First International Symposium on eco-translatology, which was held in Macao in 2010。 After that, an increasing number of scholars and experts attach importance to eco-translatology, which has been gradually used in translational practice such as catchphrase, public signs, literature, etc。 来自优O尔P论R文T网WWw.YoueRw.com 加QQ7520`18766 生态翻译学视角下电影《疯狂动物城》的字幕翻译(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_201020.html
