On Pun Translation in Two Chinese Versions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland¬ from the Perspective of Communicative Translation
Chapter One Introduction
This research explores the translation of puns in two Chinese versions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland¬ based on the theory of Newmark’s communicative translation. In this part, the author will briefly introduce the significance, purpose, an introduction to pun and the outline of the research.
1.1 Significance and Purpose of the Research
The significance of this thesis can be described in the following three aspects.
Firstly, with the rapid development of culture exchange between the east and the west, more and more foreign literary works are now translated into Chinese, especially the children literature which may have an effect upon the growth of Chinese children. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland¬, as a piece of classic foreign children literary work, is famous for numerous rhetorical devices used in it, puns in particular. Thus, this work can provide enough cases for the study on pun translation.
Secondly, pun is a rhetorical device frequently adopted in literary works. However, because of differences in culture and language, pun translation becomes a much more challenging task for the translators. As a result, pun translation is worth analyzing.
Thirdly, this research will take a new angle-communicative translation to study the pun translation. In the previous studies, the relevant researches are often done from some other perspectives.
The purpose of this research is to find out some strategies and ways of pun translation in children literary works by choosing two Chinese versions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland¬ and analyzing their pun translation based on Newmark’s communicative translation.
1.2 Introduction to Pun
In this part, we will know the definition, typology, and rhetorical functions of puns.
1.2.1 Definition
Pun, termed as “paronomasia” in Greek, is a play on words which indicates two or more meanings by exploiting multiple meanings of words or similar-sounding words. (Wen, 1992: 321). It is often used to create a humorous or rhetorical effect, to show the obscure beauty and the cultural connotation of a language as well as to demonstrate its users’ superb language skills. Because pun has these functions, it has become one of the earliest used rhetorical devices in literary works to convey a sense of humor to readers. 从《爱丽丝漫游奇境记》两个汉译本看双关语翻译(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_21781.html
