摘要《西游记》与《天路历程》分别是中国和英国文学史上极具有浓厚宗教思想,宣扬耶佛教义的作品。本论文主要介绍了两部作品的主题思想。根据文学比较研究理论,分析了两部作品作者和主题上的异同点。从而揭示了,尽管两部作品产生于不同的民族,不同的历史时期和不同的国别意识,但是在主题和情节上存在着相似性和差异。本论文不仅在对两部作品的比较研究方面开拓了新的思文空间,而且为两部小说此后的进一步研究提供了一定的参考价值。32885

Abstract The Journey to the West and The Pilgrim’s Progress are both significant works in world literature history, which showing deep rooted Buddhist teachings and Christian religious thoughts. This paper mainly discusses the themes of the two books. On the basis of the theory of the comparative literature theme study, the writer analyzes the similarities and differences of the two writers and the themes of the two great works. Accordingly, it reveals that though produced in different historical period, national identities, both of them show the similarities and differences in themes and structure of plots. This study not only servers as a special space for thinking but also a complement to the present research of the themes of the two great works.

I. Introduction
The Journey to the West written by Cheng’en Wu and The Pilgrim’s Progress written by Bunyan are regarded as the most popular and the most ingenious works in the world literature history, even playing a significant role in the process of human civilization. As the Four Great Classical Novels in Chinese literature history, The Journey to the West was wildly known by every barber in China. It presents a grand scale and reflects the real contradiction society with its rich imagination. This novel is an extended account of the legendary pilgrimage of Tang dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang who traveled to the Western Region to obtain sacred texts and returned after many trials and sufferings. While as an allegory fiction, The Pilgrim’s Progress was at one time second only to The Bible in popularity among ordinary people. This novel forms a progress of redemption salvation with a dream. It was described as “the most perfect allegory works” in western countries. The description of the Vanity Fair in this novel exercises a great influence on another great novel, The Vanity Fair, which was written by great English writer Thackeray. The Journey to the West and The Pilgrim’s Progress retail the story in terms of the religious pilgrimage, which form the characters with ideal in spite of thousands of difficulties on the road ahead. Although wrote in different era, had different creation background, both of the two novels share a lot in common and serve as a complement to each other when confront with differences. The two great works combine the religious with real world, pointing out the problem with sublime words. Owing to the similar experiences of the two writers’ and the religious atmosphere in that conventional society, both of the two writers present the plot with rich imagination and strong religious atmosphere. Comparing the two great works based on the similarities between the religious images and the combination of the romanticism and realism.
