On the Study of Wang Zuoliang’s Translation of the Thunderstorm
Chapter One  Introduction
1.1 About Drama Translation
Zhu Shenghao once concluded the principles of translating as follows when he translated Shakespeare’s plays : “While translating this book, I tried to maintain the verve of the original work to the utmost. The translation of a single word or sentence often took me weeks of deliberation.” (cited by Xiong Tingting, the Amphibious Nature of Drama Translation, 2006, p.111)
1.2 Significance of the Present Study
Drama is often attached great attention by the public, but the drama translation is not the same. Peter Newmark once pointed out that the crucial Purpose of translating a play is to make it performed on the stage triumphantly. So, the readability and performability seem to become the standards to judge whether the translation of a play is successful or not. A successful translation must make a great combination of the two major factors. This paper tries to analyze why Wang Zuoliang’s translation of Thunderstorm achieved great success under the guide of Adaptation Theory.
There are lots of different translation theories used to do translation studies. But in a very long time, discussions on translation strategies only halt at linguistic level, and whether the translation is faithful to the source texts becomes the only standard to judge the success of a translation version. But the Adaptation Theory can provide you other standards to evaluate a translation version.
Attracted by Adaptation Theory, the author is trying to discuss the translation of Lei Yu under the guide of the Adaptation Theory, to show whether the translation is adequate by comparing the Chinese play, Lei Yu and its English version Thunderstorm.
1.3 Objectives and Questions of the Present Study
This paper is about Wang Zuoliang’s translation of Thunderstorm in the light of Adaptation Theory. The author tries to find out the best guide to translate a Chinese drama into English and to evaluate the result of translation and what kind of translation is near perfect. In this thesis, the following questions are proposed:
(1).Analyzing the features of drama language
(2).Analyzing the methods and strategies that Wang Zuoliang use in the translation of Thunderstorm by taking examples, thus finding out why Wang’s English version of Thunderstorm is a good success 顺应论王佐良的《雷雨》英译本研究(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_32289.html
