This paper includes five chapters. Chapter one is introduction. It introduces what the English idiom is and the characteristics of English idioms. Chapter two is some factors lead to the mistranslation of English idioms. In this chapter, five factors are listed: culture, historical development, religion, customs and the geography. Chapter three is the strategies of English idioms translation. This chapter offers three methods to translate English idioms. They are: literal translation, free translation and corresponding translation. Chapter four is some suggestions for translators to translate English idioms correctly: the quality of a translation, to identify the English idioms from the context, combing with the context to translate and keeping the original flavor. The last chapter is conclusion.
Ⅱ. The Factors Lead to Mistranslation of English Idioms
2.1 Culture
As we know, translation is to build a bridge between eastern and western culture, thus two sections must be paid attention to during the process of translation. That is, we must keep the culture elements in the source language as much as possible. What’s more, in the source and target text, the culture elements should be considered. And without language, they maintain, culture would not be possible. In return, language is influenced and shaped by culture. Britain has its own splendid culture English idioms are the essence of culture, which reflects its national unique fashions. And it also reflects the environment, life, history, and culture of the native speakers, and is closely associated with their innermost spirit and feeling. So the English culture is helpful for translators to understand English idioms and develop interests in studying English idioms. At the same time, to learn English idioms can help us to know the western cultures and develop the communicative abilities. So the translation of idioms is not only including link up two languages, but communicate with the culture information between two languages.
