I. Introduction
1.1 General Introduction to Emily Dickinson
A legendary American poet Emily Dickinson was born on December 10th, 1830, in Amherst, Massachusetts, and died on May 15th, 1886. She began writing poetry at the age of 20, and most of her early poems have been lost. She stayed in her hometown all through her life and she seldom went out to have a trip. She was called her a “woman of Amherst”. She immersed herself in her poetry in solitude, leaving 1775 Song Poems. In her lifetime only 7 poems was copied out by friends from her letter (Aiken 6). The rest are published only after her death, which have a great influence on the literature world. Dickinso’s poetry is mainly about life interest, nature, life, faith, friendship, and love. She was extremely clear-sighted, highly sensitive in writing poetry. Her poetry is original both in form and content. She is regarded as one of the pioneers of the 20th century of modernist poetry.
She was born in a lawyer family and her youth life is dull and quiet with formal religious education. She is one of the most famous poets who is regarded as the father of American literature. A large number of her poems she locked in the box is the greatest gift that she left this world. In her lifetime, her works failed to win favor of the general public and at that time, she was not understood and was always misunderstood. But her creative talent was not damaged. According to statistics, Emily’s creativity was so amazing that she left more than 1800 poems ultimately, including original the 1775 ones and the newly discovered 25 ones. In 1890, Dickinson’s 115 poems were published, and later two poems and two letters were published. Edited and published in 1914, Emily Dickinson’s more poems are available, which is the foundation for her status as a woman poet in the history of literature. In 1950, Harvard bought full copyright of her poetry. A total of three poems and letters, Emily Dickinson’s corpora, were published in 1955.
