Therefore, a contrastive study on cultural connotations of basic words between Chinese and English is of much importance. A Contrastive Study on Cultural Connotations of Basic Color Words Between English and Chinese
I. Introduction
Color is the perception of people to the objective world. Color is also a visual perceptual phenomenon that enables people to distinguish the objects which have the same size, shape, and material. However, there are different perceptions of color words in different cultures. The colors people see are predetermined by what their cultures prepare them to see. Like other words, color words have connotative meanings as well as denotative meanings. They have strong national cultural character. With the rapid development of society, more and more cross-culture communications between China and the western countries occur all the time. However, different geographic conditions, the background of politics and economy, the ways of thinking, religious beliefs, traditional customs, psychology and some other reasons result in different cultural associations in Chinese and English. Based on all kinds of possible reasons considered above, misunderstanding and mistranslation occurs now and then and serious problems have even been caused in communications. Thus a contrastive study on connotations of basic color words in Chinese and English cultures is becoming more and more significant. By the contrastive study on cultural connotation of basic terms between English and Chinese, we can know more about what is going on in people’s mind, in their languages and culture, which can not only broaden our vision, but also provide attributions to the research of lexicology.
