Abstract George Eliot is widely known as one of the most influential writers in Victorian Britain. However, the female characters in her novel have not been fashioned into the woman like herself. Hence, she is criticized by the feminists. Examining from the feminist point of view after 1970’s, critics have found a new interpretation. And combined with the life experience of George Eliot, the thesis will use the feminism literary theory to reinterpret her earlier work and partly autobiography—The Mill on the Floss, especially the main character—Maggie, and analyze her unique realistic concept on woman in the aspects of education, profession and marriage.42615

    The thesis consists of five parts, introduction, three major chapters and conclusion. A brief review of the status of women in Victorian Britain and the feminism literary theory used in the thesis are conducted in the introduction. The three major chapters discuss her contradictory feminism by comparing her experience with the characters of Maggie in the terms of education, profession and marriage.

    In conclusion, the thesis aims to reveal the feminism in The Mill on the Floss and prove that The Mill on the Floss is not only a realistic novel corresponding to the traditional morality in Victorian Britain but also a feminist novel reflecting “female problems” in that time.

摘要乔治·艾略特是英国维多利亚时期最具有影响力的小说家之一，被弗吉尼亚·伍尔夫称为“女性的骄傲和楷模”。但她作品中的女性人物却没有被塑造成像其本人一样蔑视传统的女性形象，因此一直受到女权主义者的批评。随着20世纪70年代女性主义批评兴起，批评家们对她的作品有了新的解读。所以本文将从女性主义角度出发，结合她自身的生活经历，重新解读她的带有自传性质的早期作品《弗洛斯河上的磨坊》中麦琪的人物形象，从教育、职业和婚姻三方面分析乔治·艾略特独特的写实主义妇女观。

论文由五个部分组成，引言、结论和三个章节。其中，引言首先简单的介绍维多利亚时期女性的地位和论文所要运用到的女性主义理论，三个章节分别从教育、职业和婚姻这三方面结合乔治·艾略特的自身生活和观点分析麦琪的人物形象，探索她充满矛盾的女性主义。

综上所述，本文旨在从教育、职业和婚姻三方面揭示《弗洛斯河上的磨坊》中独特的女性主义，证明《弗洛斯河上的磨坊》不只是一本符合维多利亚时期传统道德的现实主义小说，更是一本反映维多利亚时期“妇女问题”的写实女性主义小说。
