Abstract Since the reform and opening up, the translation of western masterwork has prevailed in China. And in the globe, the west shows unprecedented interest in China, especially after the successful organization of Beijing Olympic Games and Shanghai World Expo. English translation of Chinese classics is the main part of transmission of Chinese culture, and Lun Yu, one of Chinese classics, has always been in scholars’ good graces. Existing studies on the English translation of Lun Yu mostly focus on the linguistic level, while few probe into the relation of the English translation of Lun Yu and transmission and succession of Chinese culture. However, the prosperity of a nation partially relies on the development of it’s own culture as well as on the absorption of foreign culture. 43712

Therefore, in order to find a better way to satisfy the need for culture transmission, this study takes Waley’s The Analects as a sample to make further exploration into the English translation of Chinese classics.

From the perspective of cultural criticism, the study finds that the misreading and misinterpretation of Chinese classics is closely related to ideology of translator; the English translation of Chinese classics is affected by the culture of the translator; when interpreting Chinese classics, the translator should stand in the position of cultural equality; joint efforts of scholars and experts from all over the world are needed in the succession and transmission of Chinese culture.

摘要从改革开放开始，外籍文献的汉译现象就开始在中国盛行。在国际上，随着北京奥运会和上海世博会的成功举办，中国的国际地位日益提高，西方各国对中国文化的兴趣也空前高涨。随之，在学界，汉文化经典英译成为传播中国传统文化的主要方式。而《论语》作为一部汉文化、儒学经典，一直深受各国学界研究者的青睐。但此前学者对《论语》英译本的研究大多集中在语言层面上，而对这部汉文化经典英译与中国传统文化传播关系的研究相对较少。其中有的深受追捧，有的褒贬不一。

    然而，对一个民族、国家繁荣、强大的界定，很大程度上取决于其文化的发展水平与传播力度。中国文化想要走出国门,走进西方~优尔!文:论;文'网www.youerw.com，走向世界，就需要翻译界对传统文化的深入研究。

因此，为了找到更好的方式来满足这种文化传播的需求，本研究将以阿瑟·威利的英译本The Analects为例，从文化批评角度，依据意识形态操控理论对威利在英译《论语》过程中产生的误读误译现象进行深入分析，指出译文中的误读、误译之处，并从译者文化背景、意识形态、文化平等等方面找出其原因。研究指出，第一，汉文化经典英译的误读误译与译者的意识形态密切相关；第二，汉文化经典英译会受制于译者的文化背景；第三，汉文化经典英译，译者应立足于文化平等的立场；第四，中国优秀传统文化的继承与传播需要世界各界学者、专家的共同努力。
