1. Introduction
1.1 Background of the Research:
Setting at the American Civil War, Gone With the Wind is recognized as one of the most great novels with a historical theme and a strong sense of romance in America. By describing the rise and fall of families of the main characters, it centers at Scarlett to reflect the social reality of the southern states of the United States in the certain important historical period. In a whole, the novel strives to create a female character Scarlett, whose home was destroyed by the Civil War. Unwilling to give in to perdition and destruction, she became the newly emerging capitalist by her own efforts and struggle eventually. At the same time, the complicated love, marriage and family entanglement among Scarlett and Ashley Wilkes, Rhett Butler, Charles Hamilton and Frank Kennedy is the line of the novel.
Margaret Mitchell, its author, is a famous American writer who is known for her Gone with the Wind, considered to create a novel in the context of civil war as she was born when the war came to an end. She made Scarlett her representation of her unique and new views in that period. Besides, some of her personal experiences were integrated into the novel, such as on marriage, values and intense female consciousness, all had been reflected in the novel.
Because of the popularity of Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind, researches have been made toward its different versions in different perspectives, some in the perspective of language, cultural, subjective, and some in the perspective of domestication and foreignization, functionalist approach, rewriting, polysystem theory and so on.
In WangLili’s dissertation Translation and Language Change—in the Perspective of Comparison of Three Chinese Versions of Gone with the Wind, she believes because of the social changes, language changes while producing various language varieties. From the aspects of diachronic and synchronic varieties in sentences, vocabularies as well as colloquial languages, she makes a comparison of the three versions of Gone with the Wind, finding that the inpidual translation skills exists in each version at the same time.
