ABSTRACT Public political speech is now becoming a major way of international communication. Generally, the politicians try to convey their ideology in political speeches consciously or subconsciously and finally realize their intentions. American president Barack Obama is one excellent politician and orator who has conquered billions of listeners with his passionate addresses. The strength of rhetoric also helps him a lot besides his own outstanding political accomplishment. He uses various kinds of rhetoric to make his addresses more vivid and convincing. Thus, it is meaningful to explore Obama’s weekly addresses to help us have a better understanding of English rhetoric and mastery of public speaking skills.
This paper analyzes Obama’s addresses with Aristotle’s rhetoric as a theoretical framework which mainly includes language rhetoric and speech rhetoric. Language rhetoric consists of phonological, lexical, syntactical and textual devices. Speech rhetoric consists of logos, pathos and ethos. This paper chooses his weekly addresses delivered from 2014 to 2016.
This paper includes five parts. Chapter one is a general introduction to the paper. It introduces the origin, objective, significance and organization of the paper. Chapter two is the literature review of the paper. It reviews the studies in rhetoric abroad and at home. Chapter three is theoretical framework and methodology. It introduces Aristotle’s rhetoric in two aspects. Then, research questions and data collection and research procedures presented. Chapter four gives a detailed analysis of how Obama employs Aristotle’s rhetoric in his weekly addresses. Four language rhetoric devices and three appeals analyzed one by one. At the end of this chapter is a summary. Chapter five is the conclusion of this paper. It includes the major findings, implications and limitations of the study.46181
The paper collects a large number of samples, which are all updated. Hopefully, it will help readers better study and master the figure of speech and the use of three appeals.

 摘要公共政治演讲已成为国际交流的主要途径。一般来说，政治家们在政治演讲中试图传达他们的思想意识，从而最终实现他们的意图。美国总统奥巴马是一位杰出的政治家、演说家。他用他激情洋溢的演讲征服了亿万听众，除了自身优秀的政治素养之外他深厚的修辞学功底也给予了他很多帮助。他运用了各种各样的修辞学手段来使他的演讲更生动更有说服力。因此，对于奥巴马演讲的研究对于英语修辞学的学习和运用有重大的意义。
本文以亚里士多德修辞学为框架研究了奥巴马白宫每周演讲，主要选取了其从2014年到2016年的演讲。研究的主要方面有语言修辞和言语修辞，语言修辞包括了语音修辞、语义修辞、句法修辞和语篇修辞；言语修辞包括理性诉求、情感诉求和道德诉求。
本文主要分为五个部分，第一章是对于整个文章的简介，主要有研究背景，研究目的，研究意义和主要框架。第二章是文献综述，回顾了国内外有关修辞学的研究。第三章是整个文章的理论框架和研究方法，首先从两个方面介绍了作为框架的亚里士多德修辞学，接着介绍了研究方法、研究材料的收集和研究步骤。第四章详细分析了奥巴马在他的演讲中是如何运用这些修辞手段的，一一介绍了四种语言修辞和三诉求在其中的运用，最后则是对本章的总结。
本文收集了大量材料样本以确保研究的时效性和实用性。因此才能更好地帮助读者学习并掌握亚里士多德修辞学在演讲中的运用。
