1. Introduction
1.1 F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Great Gatsby
F,Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) was an American author who is regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. Born in upper-middle-class family, Fitzgerald had been through richness and poverty, and his work are all laid by the passion of the Jazz Age. In his finished four novels: This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby, and Tender Is the Night, American dream theme was what runs through all of these. Especially his most famous work: The Great Gatsby.
The Great Gatsby, widely regarded as the most important masterpiece of F. Scott. Fitzgerald, has won the praise since its publication. It is a story about Gatsby and his pursuit for the “American dreams”.
Gatsby was a major officer when he was young, and at that time, he fell in love with a girl named Daisy, who also had a soft spot for him. Unfortunately, Daisy broke up with Gatsby and married a crew called Tom, who was born in a rich family, because Gatsby was forced to Europe after the outbreak of the First World War. But Daisy’s marriage was not happy, for Tom had a mistress in private and the material satisfaction can’t fill her spiritual emptiness. Gatsby was in great pain after hearing of Daisy’s marriage, and convinced that it is money that made Daisy betray the purity of her heart. Therefore, he devoted to be a rich man. Several years later, Gatsby finally succeeded and built a mansion in front of Daisy’s residence in a bid to attract her attention and save the lost love. Nick was moved by Gatsby’s infatuation, so he visited his distant cousin Daisy and conveyed Gatsby’s mind. From then on, Daisy teased Gatsby intentionally when they met with each other so that Gatsby was totally controlled by her and thought that this endless love ultimately had a satisfying ending. However, what he didn’t know was that Daisy has changed and just regarded their affair as stimulation. Then, a terrible accident happened. Once Daisy drove in an irritable mood and killed her husband’s mistress unconsciously, Gatsby undertook the responsibility of driving to protect her, but Daisy has made up her mind to abandon Gatsby. At last, the mistress’s husband was convinced by Tom’s provoking and shot Gatsby. Gatsby will never know that on the day of his funeral, Daisy and her husband were on their way to Europe for travelling. The Great Gatsby is popular not only because it has created unique characters and great story, but also it has special historical meaning of literature. 分析《了不起的盖茨比》中的艾克尔伯格医生的眼睛的象征意义:http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_50537.html
