摘要托马斯哈代是英国19世纪成功的批判现实主义作家，他最出色的小说《德伯家的苔丝》向我们讲述了一个关于纯洁又美丽的姑娘的悲伤的故事。当时的环境导致了苔丝的悲剧，但最大的原因是她自己性格上的弱点。就像她对自己的命运既有反抗的部分，同时也有妥协的部分。像所有普通的农民一样，苔丝无助地反抗当时的社会。所有违背道德与伦理的事物都会成为牺牲品，苔丝也不例外。本章分为五部分。第一部分主要是对作者及其小说进行了介绍；第二部分是对托马斯及其小说的回顾；第三部分分析了苔丝生活的背景；第四部分分析了苔丝性格与其悲剧结局的分析；最后一部分引出了文章的结论。通过本文的研究以期加深读者对这篇著作的理解的目的。50213

Abstract Thomas Hardy was a successful critical realistic writer in the nineteenth century in Britain. His most influential work was Tess of the D’urbervilles which told us a sad story about a pure and beautiful girl. It was the poor environment that caused Tess’s tragic fate.But the biggest reason was her own weakness in character. Such as her dual nature of the society---resistance and compromise. Like every common peasant, Tess fought with the dark society hopelessly. Society always ruined the things which against it’s morality and ethic. So, Tess became the sacrificial victim of it. This paper consists of five parts. The first part is a brief introduction to Tomas Hardy and his novel; The second part is the literature review to Tomas and his novel; The third part analysis the the background of that time; The forth part analysis the reasons which lead to heroine’s tragedy; The last part is the conclusion. The paper is aimed at deepening our understanding of the character and the theme in the great novel.

I. Introduction

Thomas Hardy(1840-1928), a great successful English writer describes the tragedy of a beautiful but poor young woman Tess. In his work, the heroine Tess fought to her poor fate all the time, till to be ruined. Thought people all know that her poor ending is inevitable, they still feel sorry for her. The cause of her tragedy is always the readers concern. People just can’t imagine someone like Tess, a young, noble and kind girl, should suffer such inevitable ruin. They all wonder that what killed her and what push her go through the tragedy way?
