Abstract
Jane Austen was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her realism and biting social commentary have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics.
This thesis aims at analyzing morals of the early 19th Century Britain reflected in Mansfield Park. It is worth noting that the amateur theatre gives us a good show about different people’s morality. From the acting that seems to be absurd it is easy to infer different people’s character, whether they mate their words to his deeds or not, and their standard to judge between right and wrong. The story happened in the 19th century Britain when western world was under the material benefits of slavery and imperialism. During the period of transition from agricultural society to industrial society the economy of Britain made great progress, which led to a big gap between the rich and the poor. Social morals were dearly influenced under the background, which were reflected in Mansfield Park.
Morals of the early 19th century Britain lie in hierarchical social consciousness and the love concept of money first. Most people are judged according to their social status and wealth. Those rich men who look decent possibly have skeletons in the closet. From the character sketch and psychological description in Mansfield Park, Jane Austin aims to express the importance of traditional virtues. She thinks that people’s love should be based on reason accompanied with excellence of heart. The author hopes through Mansfield Park to express a kind of positive spirit arousing people’s moral consciousness.
The thesis is pided into four parts. The first part serves as an introduction. The second part aims at analyzing the morals of the 19th century Britain reflected in Mansfield Park. The third part attempts to analyze the realistic significance of the morals in Mansfield Park. The last part functions as a conclusion.
