Introduction
In 2012, the film On the Road which was adapted from On the Road written by Jack Kerouac, has brought us again with the 1960s-style experience among the youth. As the Holy Bible of a quite distinguished group at that time, On the Road has always occupied a very special position in the heart and blood of young people not only in America but also ones all through the world. By studying the counterculture elements in the novel, this paper is aimed to uncover the counterculture elements in On the Road and discuss the relation of the 1960s’ America, Jack Kerouac and On the Road.
Jack Kerouac, who is the author of On the Road, was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on March 12, 1922, and died on October 21, 1969 in St. Anthony’s in St. Petersburg. His death was caused by his long-term abuse of alcohol. He has written 17 novels during his 47 years, including several famous ones like The Town and the City, The Dharma Bum, Desolation Angels, Big Sur and On the Road. These books not only belong to him, but also are a gift to his time which arouses great influence in the literature field, more importantly, inspires a new generation who wantes to break free from the old rules and goes outside to experience the way how the world works.
On the Road was written in three weeks in April, 1951 and was typed continuously onto a 120-foot roll of paper. Though not accepted by most publishing presses in the beginning, On the Road then, published by the Viking Press, won him excellent reputation and was named as “The bible of the Beat Generation”. Based on the travels of Kerouac and his friends, the two main characters of the novel are the narrator Sal Paradise, and his friend Dean Moriarty. With their free attitude and adventurous spirit, they set their foot on the road across America for several times, which encouraged thousands of youth, in history, to imitate the behavior after the novel’s publication. 《在路上》中反叛文化的解读:http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_75934.html
